For complex design of high-power high-efficiency klystron amplifiers, from the cathode to the collector, a combination of computer codes has been developed:

  • A primary design is carried out with a 1-1.5D disk-ring-electron-beam code “Klystron - MSU".
  • A more exact optimization of the klystron performance is carried out with a 2.5D PIC code "Arsenal-MSU". The code is capable to simulate thermionic or field-emission electron guns, linear and non-linear bunchers, distributed output structures, conventional and depressed collectors.
  • Parasitic oscillations and RF breakdown are studied with a code "Multiwaves-MSU".

The above codes were used to simulate klystrons developed in Russia, the KEK, the Thales and the Institute of designing Electronics of Chinese Academy of sciences. Experimental data proved to be in a good agreement with the theory.

Development of a 3D computer code is underway.
